Two Spirit, transgender, and gender diverse Community Advisory Board

Northern Mosaic Network (NMN) formed this community advisory board (CAB) to guide our advocacy on improving access to gender-affirming health care and other issues that impact Two Spirit, transgender, and gender diverse (2STGD) people in the Northwest Territories. The CAB aims to bring together 2STGD people with a diverse range of lived experiences who can provide guidance and feedback on NMN's current advocacy efforts, as well as help set priorities for future advocacy. The goal of the CAB is to create a platform that centres the perspectives the community members who are most impacted by these issues, which will help ensure that NMN's advocacy work is driven by the needs of 2STGD community members.

If you have any questions about the board, you can reach out to our Peer Support Coordinator at coordinator@northernmosaic.net.

2STGD community advisory board members

  • Bex Saari (they/them)

Bex is a non-binary transmasc person who has called Yellowknife home since 2018. They work as a mechanical engineer in the NWT mining industry and are currently completing their MBA.

While navigating gender-affirming healthcare in the Northwest Territories themselves, Bex has become passionate about making care more inclusive, equitable, and accessible for 2STGD people. They joined the Community Advisory Board to share their lived experiences, give back to the community, and advocate for better healthcare services across the North. They hope to help ensure that everyone can access the care they need, regardless of their circumstances.

When they are not working or studying, Bex loves spending time with their wife, family, and friends. They can also be found (or not found!) travelling, woodworking, or riding their motorcycle.

  • Destiny Mercredi (she/they/nekm)

Destiny is a Two-Spirit member of the Northwest Territories Métis Nation from Thebacha on Treaty 8 territory (colonially known as Fort Smith). She also proudly carries ties and connections to Mi’kma’ki through her mother, grounding her in relationships that span both the North and the Atlantic. As a Two-Spirit Northerner from a smaller community, Destiny understands the value and importance of visibility and belonging. They currently sit on the Board of Directors as the Northern Regional Representative for the 2-Spirits in Motion Society, a national organization dedicated to supporting Two-Spirit people across Canada. Through their role on the Northern Mosaic Network 2STGD Advisory Board, nekm hopes to co-create space and strengthen connections and opportunities for Two-Spirited and other Indigenous LGBTQIA+ people across the territory. Professionally, Destiny is a Policy Advisor for Indigenous Children, Youth and Families, where they are passionate about advocacy, leading with relationship, and creating meaningful change. Destiny is excited to bring that same level of commitment to the advisory board, offering both professional expertise and lived experience to support stronger and more inclusive communities.

  • Esther Ebbing (she/her | fae/fem)

Esther is a queer, transfemme settler who grew up in Air Ronge, Saskatchewan, and moved to Sǫ̀mba K'è (Yellowknife) in 2010. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 2021 with a bachelors degree in Computing Science and a certificate in Computer Game Development. She is a mother of 2 kids with her longtime partner.

Esther decided to join this community advisory board to support advocacy for 2STGD folks, which is something that she is very passionate about.

As someone who has accessed gender-affirming health care herself, she wants to help make access to these resources as easy, efficient, and clear as possible for others who are pursuing it. She hopes she is able to use her own experiences pursuing healthcare to provide useful insight into future advocacy.

In her free time, she is spending time with her family and friends, playing games (board, video, or tabletop), or getting outdoors.

  • Jan Chua (she/her)

My name is Jan and I live in Yellowknife. I've only recently transitioned as a trans woman a few months ago, so I am fairly new to the 2STGD community as a whole, but I'm hoping to be actively involved and bring a positive impact for us!

The 2STGD experience is diverse and complex. At the worst times, it's messy and frustrating. At the best times, it's beautiful and empowering. I want more people in the 2STGD community to experience more of the beauty and feel empowered by being who they truly are, inside and outside. I am hoping that bringing my experience and desire to understand others to the CAB can make a meaningful impact.

A fun fact about me is that I love Italian pasta. I like the way that such simple ingredients can become such a beautiful dish. (There’s probably a good metaphor for life in there somewhere!)

  • Ju Orthlieb (they/them)

My name is Ju! I am a transmasc non-binary person from France and have been living in Yellowknife for a little over 3 years. During that time, I started my social and medical transition journey, navigating the Canadian and NWT healthcare system with the help of friends and community. This experience put some harsh realities in the light for me and now, I want to find ways to help others.

In my free time I love drawing, making music and jujitsu.

  • Kay Sibbeston (he/him)

Kay is a trans musician and composer living in Yellowknife, NT. As someone that has recently navigated the process of accessing gender-affirming health care in the NT, he has joined the community advisory board to lend his experience to improve NMN’s ability to advocate for all 2STGD Northerners.

  • Lee St. Denis (they/them)

My name is Lee St. Denis and I am an agender queer white settler living in Chief Drygeese Territory, the land of the Yellowknives Dene Nation in Yellowknife, NWT. I am a mother of 3 with two human babies and one furry one, Scarlett, who is my favorite. I work for the GNWT as a Workforce Diversity Officer in the Department of Finance and am passionate about social justice and antiracism.

I am very honored to be serving on this committee as being a transgender person who has many transgender loved ones; I have a vested interest in making all of our systems safer and easier for our community.

When I am not talking about social justice issues, I like to play board games, watch horror movies, nap, and be outside feeling the wind in my hair.

  • Logan Thacker (he/him)

A settler originally hailing from Brampton, Ontario, Logan Thacker has had the great fortune to have lived in communities across the North for the past twelve years. After moving to Norman Wells in 2014, he slowly meandered east to Igluligaarjuk in Nunavut, Akulivik in Nunavik, and Chisasibi in Eeyou Itschee, before heading back to NWT in 2022. He is beyond grateful to have enjoyed the hospitality and culture of so many of Canada's Indigenous Peoples. .

Logan is a nature-loving trans guy with a keen interest in advocacy, queer politics, and a deep passion for social justice. He is delighted to join the Community Advisory Board to help ensure that the voices of community members with lived experience are at the forefront of discussions related to gender diversity and affirming care in NWT.

Logan can often be found trying to decompress by hanging out wth his raven buddies in the yard of his Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ (Fort Simpson) home.
